To the attention of:
The President of the United States
Brussels, 12 September 2001.
Mister President,
With this letter I want to express my deepest condolences and regrets towards the victims, their families, the American people and you personally. These words are not just from me being the President of one of the biggest European youth organizations but also from the million young christian-democratic, moderate and conservative politicians from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Albania, San Marino, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Malta, Ukraine, Cyprus and Greece.
When I first heard the news I went to the TV room in the law firm that I am working for and with great horror I watched the terrorist attacks on the WTC in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Then I saw in the next room a few of my colleagues who were watching to black TV screens waiting for their 15.00 hours (9.00 hours ET) video conference with their business partners in the WTC in New York…
We support you, our American friends and allies, in these difficult days and months to follow. We condemn by all means these acts of terrorism and war to the free and democratic world. We know that open societies are vulnerable but we never believed that the threats were so real. We support the United States in it’s fight against terrorism and those responsible should be brought to justice and face suitable punishment.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the American people. We are in solidarity with the United States who was always on our side in securing freedom and democracy in Europe.
Freedom and democracy will prevail.
Rutger-Jan Hebben
President
